Pokemon Go - Cause for Concern
written by Victoria Ernst
Pokemon Go is a phenomenon sweeping the nation and continues to gain popularity every single day. People ranging from five year old kids to the elderly are playing this addicting game and continue to obsess about it. This game has become part of everybody’s lives whether you like it to or not. It’s the only thing people seem to be talking about. You have to ask yourself, though, is it really all just fun and games? Or is this new craze really cause for concern?
Creators of Pokemom Go claim the game helps people get outside and exercise, but as user-related accidents continue to rise across the US, it begs the question: is Pokémon Go even safe? Sure, people are going for walks and getting outdoors, but they aren’t experiencing the benefits of said exercise or outdoor time. Each time you step outside you see people staring at their phones even more than usual. People are walking off cliffs and not paying attention to traffic. The apps' instructions even warns users at the outset to pay attention to their surroundings, yet the very nature of the game seems to elicit the opposite response. People go outside and “explore” where they are, but they are not experiencing it to the fullest extent when their faces are glued to their phones.
Relationships are something else that Pokemon Go is affecting. Conversations are consumed by this game, making it the only topic discussed. It’s a common denominator, yes, but it’s also the only subject anyone wants to bring up anymore. Everywhere you go you hear people talking about it when they could be talking about so many more important things happening in the world. During a time when we should be anything but distracted from our world, it seems like that’s the only thing anyone actually wants to do. We all want to be able to get out of our reality every once in awhile, but there is a limit to the amount of obsession that should be around anything. Too much of anything is bad and Pokemon Go is getting to be too much.
"There isn’t anything wrong with playing games, there is something wrong with letting a game control you."
The game itself isn’t the problem, however, it is the fact that people have stopped doing the things they would normally do and they have stopped paying attention to anything but the app. When something consumes your mind as much as Pokemon Go seems to consume people’s minds it should worry those around them. There isn’t anything wrong with playing games, there is something wrong with letting a game control you. It isn’t necessary to get rid of the game, it’s necessary to get rid of the obsession. When people start looking for Pokemon at funeral services and holocaust museums it seems as though we should all take a step back and realize that sometimes fantasy isn’t where we should live, it’s where we should vacation.
