The general rating scale:

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being how good raw cocoa is for you and 1 being how raw cocoa tastes compared to a chocolate bar, how would I rate the...

Feel: 6.5. I like many of the products, but some of them are too harsh for my skin or the texture just isn't quite right.

Design: 7. The packages are functional, but there isn't much more than that. I'd like them to be made from recycled materials and to be recyclable themselves.

Quality: 7.5. In general, the ingredients are quality and the products themselves work relatively well. But overall, I'm not incredibly impressed. Satisfied, but not impressed.

Eco-Consciousness: 6.5. They use natural ingredients and claim to source in an environmentally friendly way. But there is little substantiation and they could be doing so much more.

Social impact: 5.5. I don't see much that they are doing other than providing healthy products. This is of course, important, but considering the size of their company, and the expendable capital they must have, it could be much, much more.

Overall: 6.6

Behind the Product

Alba Botanica is a large company with a diverse product line aimed at healthy, natural personal care. They claim a number of positive practices:

  • Cruelty free

  • Vegetarian ingredients

  • Free of parabens, phthalates, harmful sulfates and other potentially dangerous ingredients

  • No animal testing

  • Organic ingredients

  • Reduced environmental impact all along the line of manufacturing

Despite this great list of attributes, we must consider that Alba Botanica is a brand of Hain Celestial, a very large conglomerate. So while Alba Botanica may have its unique products, goals and ethos, it ultimately falls under the business management of its parent company.

I won’t use this blog post as an expose on Hain Celestial, but I will say that there is a lot of question regarding the integrity of this organic food giant.

With that said, I wouldn’t treat Alba Botanica as a go-to, always-safe choice. If there are other, more transparent, more intentional companies providing the same kind of product, consider purchasing from them first. If Alba Botanica is providing a product only otherwise available with harsh ingredients from a business with shoddy practices, pick the lesser of two evils.
